A great opportunity is on offer for an experienced Shift Manager to join a fast growing, forward thinking Food Manufacturing Company based in the Caerphilly area of South Wales.
Reporting directly to the Production Manager, the Shift Manager will be responsible for overall management of the manufacturing areas across two sites ensuring that the day to day operations are carried out efficiently and effectively within the manufacturing areas, both Baking and Packing. Managing all shift activities across two shifts, within Baking, Packing, Hygiene, Warehouse, and Weighing Up departments / areas to ensure supply of product by working as one production unit to achieve operational performance, business goals and objectives.
Support the Production Manager to ensure that the business maintains maximum effectiveness by monitoring production and process, working in partnership with key support areas such as planning and engineering to ensure that the planning, machine availability, effective PPM planning, is factored into the daily operations and quality and output is maximised.
Effective communication is essential for the success of the role, you will need to be able to communicate at all levels both with internal and external stakeholders, building strong working relationships in order to influence and bring people on board.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Ensure that Food Safety is key at all times within all manufacturing processes and practices, and this is embedded within the culture of the organisation.
Manage X2 Team Leaders within Baking and Packing on a day to day basis, ensuring that they are meeting the required standards and targets in relation to Output, Quality, H&S, Continuous Improvement, etc. Ensuring that they are working within the main scope of their roles, responsibilities and expectations as outlined within the job description.
Motivate, coach and develop your shift by setting, agreeing and reviewing individuals and department objectives, in line with business objectives.
Complete performance reviews with all employees on shift and ensure that the data is updated onto the skills matrix to support in identifying areas of risk to the business and where upskilling is required.
Motivate, coach and mentor the operational staff on your allocated shift ensuring that they are effectively performing and achieving targets, and any areas of concern are addressed promptly with the individual and the area Team Leader.
Support a culture of continuous improvement and continuously strive to identify areas of improvement that will support the improvement of site efficiency.
Ensure that employees are following and adhering to site policies and procedures; SOP’s, Work Instructions, Safe Systems of Work, Accident Reporting, etc.
Support the Production Manager and the Planning and Procurement Manager in the development of the 6- week plan, offering advice and recommendations of improvement and where efficiency and output can be maximised.
Liaise with the Production Manager in relation to production performance and offer recommendations and suggestions of how efficiency can be increased within the area(s).
Support NPD in the production of trial productions runs.
Demonstrate a good understanding of allergen control and segregation, to minimise the risk of cross contamination within the manufacturing environment.
Complete regular audits of the manufacturing area, advising where improvements can be made in the efficiency of the area/ department, and any areas of concern and share this information with the Team Leaders, enabling them to acknowledge the feedback and strive for continual improvement in their practices.
Ensure that the Manufacturing area is meeting all Health & Safety, Environmental, Quality, Engineering regulatory parameters and requirements at all times and to protect all employees within the workplace. Acting as a champion and enforcer of health and safety policies, procedures and practices, and continually seeking new safer methods of work where possible.
Working in partnership with the Production Manager to identify key roles in the production department and develop potential candidates to fulfil these roles.
Manage your direct reportees on the HR system (Bright HR), ensuring that all leave is accurately logged, as this will impact on the monthly payroll and HR processes.
Proactively manage your direct reports absenteeism according to guidelines ensuring RTW meetings are taking place and also reviewing absence trends.
Work closely with the HR department to ensure that you are taking ownership and effectively manging employees and in accordance with policies and procedures; disciplinary, grievance, absence management, investigations, performance management, etc.
Attend daily production meetings and present concerns identified from the previous days production run.
Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications
· Previous experience of operating within a Shift Manager role within a Food Manufacturing environment.
· Excellent knowledge of technical Health & Safety requirements with a relevant qualification - CIEH.
· Excellent trouble-shooter with the ability to resolve problems effectively, and within a cost-effective manner.
· Excellent communication skills.
· Confident decision maker but is able to follow the escalation procedure when instances occur that require a senior managers input / guidance.
· Excellent knowledge and understanding of the machines and processes within the manufacturing areas; baking/ packing, weigh up/ hygiene to enable you to offer hands on support when required and effectively problem solve / trouble shoot.
· Effective team player.
· Ability to deliver performance improvements.
· Managerial experience, with knowledge and experience of HR processes.
· Food safety qualification level 3.
· HACCP level 2.
· Knowledge and experience of external audits.
· People management qualification up to level 5 e.g. ILM or NVQ.
· Effective coaching and mentoring skills with the ability to adapt management and training style to suit the learner(s).

Salary - £27,000 - £28,000 pa
Hours of work - 40 hours per week, working a two shift rota
Holidays – 28 days per year, inclusive of bank holidays
Travel to work from;
Blackwood, Ebbw Vale. Tredegar, Merthyr, Newport, Cwmbran, Caerphilly, Pontypool, Abertillery, Ystrad Mynach.
